CASA

WHO ARE CASA VOLUNTEERS?

CASA volunteers, who the children often refer to as "my CASA" are diverse. The majority hold full-time jobs, some are retired, some are homemakers, some work part-time. CASA's have a variety of professional, educational, and cultural backgrounds. No special experience is required to be a CASA.  Volunteers are selected on the basis of their objectivity, competence, and commitment. CASA volunteers are ordinary citizens recruited to work alongside attorneys and social workers to represent the best interests of the children they serve.

WHAT DO CASA VOLUNTEERS DO?

Once accepted, volunteers are trained. In training, volunteers learn about legal requirements, the social service and juvenile court systems, and the special needs of children who have been neglected and abused. When a CASA volunteer is appointed to a child's case, he or she is responsible for taking the time to find out as much as possible about the child and the child's circumstances. CASA volunteers search for information by reviewing records and conducting interviews. They interview parents & guardians, teachers, doctors, therapists, and service providers. Most importantly, CASA volunteers get to know each child and make sure the child is safe. CASA volunteers, with the help of their Case Supervisor, prepare written reports of their findings to the Court. The CASA then maintains close contact with the child and helps assure that the Court's orders are carried out and that the best interests of the child are being served.

Although CASA volunteers do not get involved in proving or disproving abuse charges, their written reports to the judge provide in-depth review of each child's family circumstances. Their reports are expected to be independent, objective, fact-based, and thorough. The ultimate goal is to ensure that children are placed in a safe and permanent homes.
